Merc takes angle grinder to C-Class Coupe for Geneva debut
After teasing us with an elaborate sketch, Mercedes has finally revealed the C-Class Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show. And besides the fairly obvious addition of a folding fabric top, pretty much everything is as per the Coupe.
That means many four-cylinder engines to choose from – two of them diesels – plus a couple of sixes. No news yet of a C63, so for now the hottest Cabrio is an AMG-lite, the C43. It has a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 with 362bhp, plus 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a few other clever bits and pieces borred from the C63.
0-100kph takes 0.1s longer than the equivalent Coupe, which isn’t half bad considering all the extra weight you’re no doubt carting around.
Britain loves a cabrio, and Britain is quite cold, so keeping you warm is Merc’s optional Airscarf system, which blows hot air onto the back of your neck as you drive along. Aircap, meanwhile, is a kind of draught stop built into the windscreen frame. It deploys at the same time as a second screen behind the rear seats to reduce cabin turbulence, keeping occupants’ hair in good form.
If the weather turns while you’re on the move, the roof can be operated at speeds of just over 48kph. It takes 20seconds go from fully up, to fully down or back the other way.
Like the Coupe, steel springs are standard on the Cabrio (except the C43, which gets the 63’s adaptive dampers), but you can have air if you want. And as it’s a Merc, it can be had with loads of safety kit and electronic nannies like lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and many others.
